RETROspect: Predictions of a SoulCalibur kind

Image
Thatguys.co.uk is old, we have been doing this shit, and "getting too old for this shit" for an excessive amount of time. Our site has gone through a plethora of iterations all wonderfully designed in by our expert in-house team. Half of our old links don't work/exist any more, our SEO is duct-taped together in separate timelines, but on the upside we did close down our Myspace account... right? We rewind time to see how painfully cringe we once were. We go through our archives to find out how right or wrong we were, and wince at the non-woke-ness of the of our past selves. In today's RETROspect we look back at a classic Richie Post: Soul Calibur Wankery In this post I get all excited about SoulCalibur IV, mainly I get all fanboy geeky about the addition of Darth Vader and Yoda. And on top of that in a predictable Richie response, conscript Cunzy1_1 and we made a list out all of our favourite fantasy additions to the roster: Zoro (One Piece)  Anyone from ...

Soulcalibur VI: The art of character creation

Image
How spiffy When one discusses the more recent entries in the soulcalibur series, one cannot skip over the aesthetic that has become the foundation at the core of this series' progression. The fundamentals of the personae are divided between the character models and the weapon styles. The weapon styles themselves could arguably be considered the actual protagonists in the soulcalibur enterprise, whereby it is irrelevant on your character choice, as through the medium of the character creator all styles may be applied to any moving portraiture. That being said that the mainstays of the series are so iconic and Namco are aware of this, so much so that they remain immediately selectable as pillars of the games.   However it is within the character creator that the sheer breadth of the title, and the archetypal aesthetic becomes so apparent. Interacting with the character creator acquaints and exposes the user to the underbelly of the fabrication and production of ...

South Park: The Fractured but Whole

Image
South Park is old. Like really old, it has been around for over 20 years! Despite that it is still pushing boundaries and entertaining. We played the last one and thoroughly enjoyed it! Its back again! Last time in Stick of Truth" the South Park kids were playing dungeons-and-dragons-esque wizards and Elves stuff. This time they are playing superheroes. So all the story/combat is based around superhero classes and powers. And it's great. My parting thoughts on the previous South Park were " All in all, If you like South Park, just fucking play this. It's brilliant. " and that still rings true with this one too! Fans of the show will get so much out of this game. Interacting with the denizens and soaking up that South Park atmosphere. Having played the last game, one thing that struck me straight away is that the game hadn't changed. Well, not significantly, the aesthetics, walking around and the town map had not undergone a particularly spectacula...

Marvel vs Capcom vs Mortal Kombat

Image
So a while ago I was really excited about Marvel vs Capcom 3. After completing it a couple of times I grew tired of it, after pondering why, given that I love the characters and also Capcom games, I think it was just shallow. Short of a ladder to fight over and over and some unlocks, which are either crappy gallery things, or the hidden characters, which can be gotten in a couple of hours. In short, completed it once, unlocked the characters, and that was me done with it. Then Mortal Kombat came along. I had been a fan of the original Mortal Kombat since disk swapping it on the Amiga. Though I ignored many of the 3D iterations, MK4, Armageddon and Deception. The latest Mortal Kombat is great! Primarily because they brought back all the retro fighters and moves, but also because it had more depth than MvC3! I'm going to say it, Marvel versus Capcom 3 is a shallow game! Mortal Kombat has over 300 challenges, story mode, and some worthy alternate costumes to unlock. ...
